This workshop is supported by a Research Environment Links grant, ID 339568416, under the Newton Programme Vietnam partnership. We are pleased to hold a workshop on the above theme in Belfast, UK on 23-27 July 2018. The workshop is being coordinated by Associate Professor Trung Q. Duong (Queen’s University Belfast, Belfast, UK) and Dr. Nguyen-Son Vo (Duy Tan University, Da Nang, Vietnam), and will have contributions from other leading researchers. We are now inviting researchers from the UK or Vietnam to apply to attend this workshop. In addition, we also would like to welcome attendants from NGOs, government agencies, industry and other civil society organisations. All travel and accommodation expenses will be covered by the Newton Research Environment Links programme. We are now in a new era of industry: the fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0), in which by 2020 about 50 billion connected devices will communicate over the Internet of Things (IoT). This in turn will transform our economy and society in many ways, especially in lower income countries such as Vietnam.
Vietnam has often been associated with a relatively less developed industrial base (i.e, reliant on natural resources, labour-intensive, and low value-added). Furthermore, it is lagging behind on social well-being indicators. To close these development gaps, there are extensive needs for digital technologies. In this regard, IoT technology holds considerable promise as a digital innovation that has the ability to bring significant impact to countries of all degrees of technology adoption, which indicates that IoT is well-suited for the long-term development goals in Vietnam.
The IoT technologies have entered and transformed key areas of human life (smart home, self-health monitors), business (RF identification tags), transportation (self-driving cars), factories (smart robots), and cities (smart air pollution monitors, e-healthcare, smart governments) etc. Yet, while the picture of how the IoT in Industry 4.0 can be of support is very clear, there have been uncertainties, opportunities, and challenges over the adoption of IoT technologies in Vietnam.
Our workshop addresses these issues and covers the following research themes: Communication and networking technology for IoT; IoT system and network architecture; Embedded systems and sensor networks in IoT; Security/privacy/ safety in IoT; IoT applications and services; Health monitoring – wearable devices; and Environment automation. How these themes can be transformed to be applicable to Agriculture and Disaster Management which are the two critical needs in Vietnam. This workshop will be jointly coordinated by experts from leading universities in the UK (Queen’s University Belfast) and Vietnam (Duy Tan University). Dissemination activities targeting wider audience further aid the translation of research knowledge into benefits and improvements.
